Wheezing, coughing and short of breath - Oh My!

This year, my husband came down with a persistent wheeze – a noisy, irritating rattle from his lungs. As he slept, it sounded like he’d swallowed a party horn.

It was asthma.

Having been stuck with new, and less adequate, health insurance coverage, he was facing having to pick up the direct cost of asthma meds and the one he’d used previously was going to cost more than $275. As a matter of principle (think Yosemite Sam having a fit about pharmaceutical companies overcharging the masses), he wanted to pursue an alternative. He needed something affordable and effective.

He hoped for a generic and asked the pharmacist about one.“There is no generic medication for asthma,” the pharmacist explained. What? The Asthma and Allergy Foundation says there are 20 million people in the United States with asthma. And not a single generic, affordable, effective asthma medication?

One local chiropractor offered an alternative. He hooked up my husband to a machine that promised to determine every malady he suffered from. For just $2,500, and weekly sessions with a machine that whirred and hummed, the chiropractor promised he could rid my husband of asthma, forever. He came home from the chiropractor and mentioned something about “snake oil.” He didn’t go back.

The next option was to try something available online or from the local naturopathic or homeopathic store.

But first, let’s take a look at what’s going on when an asthma attack strikes. When you experience asthma, the airways in the lungs become blocked or they narrow due to a type of allergic or non-allergic response. The response can be a chronic one, and is generally not well understood. The causes can be irritants like pollens, dust mites or molds, or an illness like a respiratory infection.

Dr. Andrew Weil also writes about natural remedies for asthma. Check out his thoughts here. He has some specific suggestions including trying lobelia or Indian tobacco by mixing three parts tincture of lobelia with one part tincture of capsicum (which is red pepper and cayenne pepper). Twenty drops of the mixture in water at the start of an asthma attack every thirty minutes up to four times should help. Here are some suggestions Dr. Weil has made, including my own:

  • Decreasing protein to 10 percent of daily caloric intake and increasing plant proteins.
  • Delete dairy products and substitute other calcium sources.
  • Increase intake of organically grown fruits and vegetables.
  • Use extra virgin olive oil, while deleting polyunsaturated vegetable oils as well as trans-fatty acids and partially hydrogenated oils (like margarine).
  • Increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your respiratory tract secretions more fluid.
  • I’ve had luck with cutting out wheat products in addition to dairy.
  • Eat ginger and turmeric regularly for their anti-inflammatory effects. I use ginger in fresh juices like carrot and apple juice.
  • Change the filters in your home’s air ducts. Try getting out of town to see how you do with different air patterns and dust levels. A change in climate might stop your asthma.
  • Rule out acid reflux disease as a cause of asthma. Over the counter medications can reduce this.
  • Experiment with homeopathic medication like AsthmaMist. Try this for two months to see if your symptoms subside.

These are all great options, but our solution came when we found AsthmaMist, a mix of natural plant-based substances and homeopathic elements with a proven track record, all known for effective asthma relief. Finally, we’d found our affordable and accessible alternative. See their list of ingredients here.

While you can run down to your local natural foods or naturopathic store for a similar alternative, I was happy with their 'try it for free' deal which you can find out more about on my website at gracielake.com. (The details: You get 30 days to test it, and if you are not completely satisfied for any reason, you can return it for a refund. Starting 30 days from your order date, you can request a new 30-day supply for FREE every month and only pay $14.97. How cool is that?)

My husband used it for three months and got his asthma under control without any side effects. No more party horns at night, no steroids, no expensive pharmaceuticals, and blessed relief.

Today, he has no sign of asthma, and the problem has passed. If it occurs again, we’ll have him use an over-the-counter naturopathic allergy medication, and I wouldn't hesitate to use AsthmaMist again.

Good information on asthma cures. One of our sons got asthma when he was young. Another son and daughter got theirs when they were in their late 30's. We have one granddaughter with asthma. Makes you wonder why so much asthma. I know this sounds funny but our son had problems when he woke in the morning we were once told to give him Coca-Cola (not diet) it would clear up the ashma. It worked.

I plan to try some of your suggestions. I know I should cut out dairy and wheat, but haven't reached that point yet. : )
